The Ducks went up 1-0 at the 5:15 mark of the first period, but the Predators answered by scoring back-to-back goals (Filip Forsberg and Austin Watson). Their penalty-killing unit had struggled in the first two rounds and had neutralized only 69% of the team's disadvantages, but on Friday they killed off five disadvantages, including a five-on-three manpower edge Nashville had gained in the third period after the Ducks took two straight delay of game penalties.

Nashville Predators' Filip Forsberg, center, celebrates his goal against the Anaheim Ducks with teammates Matt Irwin, right, and Viktor Arvidsson during the first period of Game 1 in the NHL hockey Stanley Cup Western Conferen. "Know what kind of chance you have to do something special and to win".

But if the Predators continue to do what they've been doing, the Ducks are in for a tough battle. Heading into the franchise's first conference finals appearance, Nashville is putting little reliance on its previous successes against the Ducks.

"Obviously it's a new year, new teams, (but) for some of us, it means a little bit more", Anaheim center Ryan Kesler said.

Professional pest: Ducks center Ryan Kesler has previously tormented the Predators in the playoffs, totaling 11 points in six second-round games with the Vancouver Canucks in 2011. "We've got 20 guys in here that we can play and can contribute".

"I feel like for years, they've been one of the top teams in the Western Conference", Rinne said after the Predators arrived in Orange County.

"We knew they were going to come hard", Gibson said. Getzlaf's been playing like he's 10 years younger, and that's good news for a Ducks team looking to get back to the Finals for a shot at a 2nd Cup.

The Predators have advanced largely on the strength of their stellar corps of defensemen in front of Rinne.

'English language losing importance in Europe'
Tusk warned that Brexit negotiations risk becoming "impossible" as he called for "discretion, moderation and mutual respect". Mr Tajani said: "We are not seeking to influence the result in the UK".

Against the Blues, the Predators' primary scoring came from their top three defensmen P.K. Subban, Roman Josi, and Ryan Ellis.

After finishing off St. Louis in the second round last weekend and resting while the Ducks labored through seven games against Edmonton, Nashville capitalized on its fresh legs to win a predictably physical game between two hard-hitting powers. Carlyle would have preferred an extra day off, but Honda Center is booked for the Stars on Ice touring show Saturday night. "You know you've got the home-ice games, you've got to win right away". "From a scheduling standpoint, that we're playing on Friday night and we just finished on Wednesday, you don't get a lot of time". Carlyle has warned his players to think of Rinne as a third defenseman on the ice capable of starting a rush with a breakout pass.

Rinne is now the playoff leader among goaltenders with an astounding.951 save percentage and 1.35 goals against average (GAA).

Revenge best served cold: The Ducks had lost five consecutive Game 7s before they defeated the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, tied for the longest Game 7 losing streak in National Hockey League history.

While Rinne appears to be at the peak of his skills again, his counterpart in Anaheim's net has work to do.

Nashville Predators center Filip Forsberg scores past Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson during the first period of Game 1 in the NHL hockey Stanley Cup Western Conference finals, Friday, May 12, 2017, in Anaheim, Calif.

In both series, the Predators used a clamp down defense and strong goal-tending to stop some of hockey's best players.
