"I just don't have it today", but still proceeded to see a doctor Thursday morning and he will fly to St. Louis Friday for more tests. The club announced yesterday that surgery was possible after Familia was diagnosed with an arterial clot in his right shoulder. Their disabled list already included ace Noah Syndegaard and All-Star slugger Yoenis Cespedes, along with catcher Travis d'Arnaud and third baseman David Wright.

Outfielder Ryan Braun was been put on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left calf, and the Milwaukee Brewers brought up infielder Eric Sogard from triple-A Colorado Springs. The pitcher was then examined, and given the OK to pitch because his ring finger did not figure prominently in his grip of the baseball. The Mets defeated the Giants 6-1. The symptoms, however, were minor, so Familia had originally been cleared to pitch. Alderson said he hoped have more details on the procedure during the game, though Familia's condition did not rise to being a "life-threatening situation".

Familia is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and three saves this season. It's no secret that the Mets compromised rotation has not performed as expected this year -with injuries a major reason for that -and they have not been able to eat up innings like in the past. Alderson said the team will evaluate internal options before external avenues. "Not to say that the market is all that broad or all that deep, but there's always possibilities". "We are going to take a look at two or three people internally over the weekend and next week and decide from there".

That could mean an increased role for rookie Paul Sewald, who had given the Mets three solid outings in relief following his recall from Triple-A Las Vegas. Smoker would return to the bullpen when the Mets recall him.

"They're pretty painful at times", manager Terry Collins said in Milwaukee about the rash of injuries.
