Arsenal's Wenger aims to silence critics with Euro push

Alexis Sanchez produced a clinical finish to set Arsenal on its way to a 2-0 win at Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday, keeping alive the team's ambitions of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

Former United defender Phil Neville criticised the cordial way players from both sides were seen joking and hugging each other before kick-off, a far cry from the frosty atmosphere that pervaded his own encounters with the Gunners.

Who will Arsene Wenger pick to start for Arsenal against Stoke City?

"That's Alexis", added the Frenchman, who saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leave the field with a hamstring problem.

For a long time it looked as if Arsenal would be frustrated by a resolute Southampton defence, while Petr Cech was the busier goalkeeper in the first half, making good saves to deny Manolo Gabbiadini and Nathan Redmond.

The away side continued to dominate possession after the interval but seemed to be unable to find the killing touch before talisman Sanchez made the difference as he has done time and again this season.

The Chilean had toiled with his teammates at St Mary's but he elevated a low-key Gunners display just before the hour mark, his quick feet and cool finish breaking the deadlock before substitute Olivier Giroud (82) sealed a win to keep Champions League qualification in sight.

Arsenal still have an FA Cup final at Wembley to look forward to this season but all efforts are now on snatching that final Champions League place - likely to be at the expense of Liverpool if they succeed.

Patty Mills earned his second consecutive start for the Spurs, finishing with 14 points and seven assists in 27 minutes of action. With Golden State standing in front of San Antonio now, though, Leonard will be key to his team's success.

"We are aware of the fact that we probably need to win all of our remaining games to be sure that we will be in the race until the last minute". "I think we are because we know what is requested from us, so let's just focus on our job".

" Overall, I must say as well that they have had good teams".

The Potters have endured a hard end to the season, as they have only won one of their last nine games, although their form at home has been better, losing just twice in 12 league matches.

They are now four points ahead of Arsenal in 5th but having played a game extra.

Chamberlain had been featuring as a make shift right wing-back in Wenger's new formation and is likely to be replaced by Hector Bellerin.

"Maybe the City game gave us confidence".

Wenger confirmed former Southampton man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was forced off in the first half with a hamstring problem - but is hoping it was mainly fatigue for the England worldwide.
