Lalu to face trial in all fodder scam cases: SC

The Supreme Court ordered former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad and other accused in the Rs 900-crore fodder scam to face separate trials in different cases filed against them.

The CBI in 1996 had booked Prasad in six fodder scam cases related to fraudulent withdrawal of animal husbandry department (AHD) funds from different government treasuries during 1990-1995.

The apex court also quashed the High Court order against former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra and ex-chief secretary of Jharkhand Sajal Chakraborty against whom the proceedings were stayed on the same ground.

The Jharkhand High Court in 2014 offered alleviation to the RJD supremo and others by dropping charges of the criminal scheme, criminal rupture of trust and avoidance of defilement in the grub trick.

The court also lashed out at the CBI for delay in filing appeal against dropping of charge against Lalu Prasad.

The senior BJP leader also mentioned the strong comments of the SC bench on Monday on role of CBI and blamed the agency's former director Ranjit Sinha, against whom the apex court for has already ordered lodging of FIR in the coal scam.

Although Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose Janata Dal (United) is in an alliance with the RJD in the state, and Yadav have not responded to the TV report yet, the news drew immediate political reactions.

The BJP has demanded that Nitish Kumar start a criminal investigation against his coalition partner.

Sinha, he said, was DIG of CBI when the fodder scam broke wand was influenced by Lalu Prasad. Since then, however, Kumar and Prasad have not have not been on the best of terms and there have been suggestions from the BJP for a reunion.

Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal party is now part of the coalition government headed by Nitish Kumar in Bihar.

21 June 1997: In a major embarrassment to the RJD, CBI conducts raids at Lalu Prasad's residence. It gave impermissable benefit to the accused person and delayed the case for several years.

Lalu was convicted and sentenced to five years in jail in one of the cases of the fodder scam by a CBI court in Ranchi in September 2013 and as a effect, he was disqualified from contesting elections for 11 years.
