Microsoft's Surface Pro 5 won't appear before a "meaningful change"

The announcement comes as Acer and Lenovo move to grab more share from Microsoft with new Surface competitors.

Microsoft just released the Surface Laptop, which runs their new operating system (OS), Windows 10 S. Since its release, the new laptop has been compared to Microsoft's top-of-the-line device - the Surface Book. In an interview to CNET, Panay has now said that the company doesn't plan to launch the successor to Surface Pro 4 tablet till the time it has achieved "meaningful change" over its predecessor. Panay's recent comments lead us to believe the Surface Pro 4 will be around for a while longer.

So, a hint - if you think you may like to get mum a Surface Pro 4 have a look around - for example, JB Hi-Fi has the entry level Core m3 for $899 and are doing deals too. His exact words were: "there's no such thing as a Pro 5". There is no other option but to wait for the Shanghai event to really know what Microsoft is planning.

"What I'm super, super sure of is that the people using a Pro 4 have a product that's going to be competitive for five years", Panay said.

So What Will We See On Microsoft's Event? If looked at in another angle, this can also mean that the successor will not be called the Surface Pro 5.

This might mean that the rumors claiming that there will not be a Surface Pro 5 device this year are true.

Rumor has it that Microsoft already has made a decision to equip Surface Pro 5 with Intel's latest Core i7 processors which means that the only thing that Microsoft has yet to do, is to decide on the display technology it wants to use. The Surface and Surface Pro products were at the very heart of that desire to merge the smartphone/tablet world with the laptop. The device is now showing its age- and the company can't ignore the fact that Surface hardware revenue dropped by 26 per cent year-over-year for Microsoft's recent completed quarter.

Initial buyers of the Surface Laptop will also receive a one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal, along with one terabyte of cloud-based storage on OneDrive. Surface will continue to dwindle, we're told. Could it be the Surface Phone? Microsoft pitches these devices as professional devices but they're underpowered. The company has already confirmed that it will announce a new hardware at the event.
