Leafs get boost on defence with Nikita Zaitsev's return

"Just a few extra reps in practice this morning, just a couple making sure you set your feet the correct way when you're trying to make plays up-ice", Schmidt said. "They're a good hockey team".

Kasperi Kapanen scored two goals, including the victor 12 minutes into double overtime as Toronto evened up its best-of-seven series with Washington at a game apiece with a 4-3 victory on Saturday night.

Toronto trailed 2-0 in the first period, and then 3-1 early in the second before Kadri and Nylander scored 4:07 apart late to tie the score in the final minute of the period.

Andersen has been central to their efforts so far, his Game 2 performance equal to and perhaps even better than Braden Holtby, the reigning Vezina Trophy victor and another top contender this season.

Tyler Bozak scored the overtime victor and Auston Matthews had a goal and an assist as the Leafs pulled in front 2-1 in their best-of-seven series with Washington with a 4-3 win on Monday night.

Though the series is tied, Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik said they probably didn't deserve to win Game 1, either, surviving a scare when Tom Wilson scored in overtime.

John Gibson gave up four goals on 16 shots before he was replaced by Jonathan Bernier in the second period.

The Senators started the overtime with the man advantage as the Bruins took a delay of game penalty with 12.5 seconds remaining in regulation.

As for the rest of the series, May is "extremely disappointed" with how the Capitals have played, and is "in absolute shock that they've let this happen".

Toronto gained momentum off that sequence. After two straight regular season championships, a much lower team has them on the ropes for the second consecutive year. William Nylander and Nazem Kadri (two points) also found the back of the net for Toronto and Frederik Andersen made 23 saves. Braden Holtby made 48 saves before being beaten on the overtime victor.

Both the Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals are still adjusting to life without hard-rock defencemen.

Even-strength scoring had been lacking, so Washington rectified that with two goals in the opening period.

This team is fast, disciplined and carries the notion that they can win every time they step out onto the ice.

"I don't know what to say", Capitals alternate captain Nicklas Backstrom told reporters.

Remaining quiet to that point following a pointless playoff debut in Game 1 was Auston Matthews. Despite all of Washington's firsts, the game ended like the previous two, and once again, in overtime, the Maple Leafs defeated the mighty Washington Capitals 4-3.

Toronto Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak (42) celebrates a goal scored by left wing James van Riemsdyk (25) (not shown) as Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby (70) watches in front of defenseman Matt Niskanen (2) and defensem.

Through three games, Leafs rookies Matthews, Mitch Marner, and Kasperi Kapanen each have two points while Hyman and Nylander - who Babcock said played his best game as a Leafs Monday - are on the board with one each.

The Capitals pulled ahead with two power-play goals in the second period.

"We had tons of energy - we should have played even longer on Saturday", Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. On Monday night, the Capitals' top line of Ovechkin, Backstrom and T.J. Oshie was dominant, accounting for four of the team's seven shots in the first period.

"It's always hard to come back [because of the] speed of the games", Zaitsev said. Martin Marincin remains in the Leafs lineup, after rookie Nikita Zaitsev came back from a suspected concussion in time to replace Polak.

Matthews stuck with the rebound and eventually batted the puck out of mid-air for Toronto's first goal. The first 10 minutes of that game, if we can continue to keep that pace up, I don't think they'll be able to play with us.
