YouTube Kids comes to a TV near you

The expansion moves the YouTube Kids app beyond just phones and tablets, in a move that you have to say is surprising wasn't implemented earlier - the service has been around for two years now. Now, the company has brought this same application over to a variety of smart TVs.

YouTube Kids is a version of YouTube age-gated so kids can watch it without finding anything made for mature audiences.

Beginning today, young YouTube fans will be able to consume content from the platform's Kids app on smart television screens. The app is growing in popularity and presently boasts 8 million weekly active viewers and 30 billion total views. As these are not Android-powered TV sets, the app will have to be downloaded from the respective manufacturer app stores, instead of the Google Play Store.

According to the post, LG webOS TVs from 2015 onwards, Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-Ray players with the Samsung App Store, and Sony TVs from 2016 or newer (after a firmware update) will be supported. Although the announcement does also note that will change soon, as it seems Google and YouTube do have plans to release a dedicated YouTube Kids app for TV sets that are powered by Android TV soon.

Currently, YouTube Kids is available for users in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Zimbabwe.
