US President Donald Trump promised to fight anti-Semitism on Tuesday, seeking to put behind him a series of missteps over the issue that have dogged his presidency.

In his remarks on Tuesday, Trump said, "Those who deny the Holocaust are an accomplice to this disgusting evil. We will never, ever be silent in the face of evil again". "As president of the USA, I will always stand with the Jewish people".

Thousands of American Jews have signed a petition challenging the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's invitation to President Donald Trump to deliver the keynote remarks at the National Day of Remembrance.

The museum will also unveil a new research center during Trump's appearance, a forum that will include details records and artifacts donated by Jews who were persecuted by Hitler during the Holocaust. In today's remarks, Trump reiterated his pledge to support Israel, and recalled the horrors and suffering Jews experienced in the Holocaust. In a video for a World Jewish Congress event on Sunday, Trump said the "mind can not fathom the pain, the horror, and the loss" of the Holocaust.

Asked about the rise of anti-Semitism since his election, Trump told a Jewish reporter to "sit down" during a news conference in February before defending himself as "the least anti-Semitic person that you've ever seen in your entire life".

"And we'll never be silent - we just won't".

"Through their suffering they have persevered, they have thrived and they have enlightened the world", Trump said. "Even worse, it's been on display in the most sinister manner when terrorists attack Jewish communities, or when aggressors threaten Israel with total and complete destruction". "And I will always stand with our great friend and partner the state of Israel", Trump said. This is my pledge to you: "we will confront anti-semitism".

Mr Spicer recently apologised for making what he later said was an "inappropriate and insensitive" statement earlier this month that compared Hitler to Syrian president Bashar Assad by suggesting that Hitler "didn't even sink to using chemical weapons".

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the president's official statement on January 27 did not mention Jewish people specifically, instead referring to the victims of the Holocaust only as "innocent people". Some also thought Trump had waited too long to come out forcefully against bomb threats against Jewish community centers nationwide.

"Evil can only thrive in darkness, and what you have brought us today is so much more powerful than evil", he added.
