North Korea's state media was defiant in a commentary marking the 85th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean People's Army, saying its military was prepared "to bring to closure the history of USA scheming and nuclear blackmail".
The United States began moving the first elements of the advanced missile defence system into South Korea in early March after the North test-launched four ballistic missiles. South Korean defence ministry officials and US military officials could not immediately be reached for confirmation.
The exercise involved 300 to 400 long-range artillery pieces, capable of hitting Seoul, South Korea, to mark the 85th anniversary of the country's military.
President Donald Trump is seeking to press North Korea by emphasising that all options - including military - are on the table to prevent Kim from getting the ability to strike North America with a nuclear weapon. Chinese President Xi Jinping, who spoke to Trump on Monday, is urging restraint from both Pyongyang and Washington.
The Michigan arrived in the South Korean port of Busan Tuesday.
South Korea's navy said it was conducting a live-fire exercise with USA destroyers in waters west of the Korean peninsula and would soon join the carrier strike group approaching the region.
Confusion had clouded the carrier's whereabouts earlier this month after USA officials indicated that it was sailing towards North Korea when it was in fact heading south.
Envoys from the US, Japan and South Korea agreed on Tuesday to keep pressuring the North to give up its nuclear programme, including via sanctions.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it was closely watching North Korean military action in the Wonsan city area, where it said the drills were being held. "North Korea is a big world problem, and it's a problem we have to finally solve".
Asked about the threshold for USA action, Haley told American broadcaster NBC that "if you see him attack a military base, if you see some sort of intercontinental ballistic missile, then obviously we're going to do that".

"North Korea appeared to show off its military capabilities by mobilising (its assets) including fighter jets and submarines".
The streets of Pyongyang, however, were quiet for Tuesday's anniversary, which was overshadowed by April 15 celebrations for the birthday of the nation's late founder Kim Il Sung and were marked by a missile test the following day.
The US leader has repeatedly called on China, the North's sole major ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang, as tensions in the region soar amid speculation it will conduct another nuclear test.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is to chair a ministerial-level Security Council meeting on the North on Friday.
"The council must be prepared to impose additional and stronger sanctions", he said.
Pyongyang's forces reportedly held its largest military drill as a show of strength against the USA and South Korea's increasing pressure.
