Manchester United can look forward to "better years" after winning the League Cup and qualifying for the Europa League semi-finals, manager Jose Mourinho has said as he begins to take stock of his first season at the Premier League club.

When asked if his approach was a calculated risk ahead of Thursday night's derby against Manchester City, Mourinho told Sky Sports on Tuesday: "I don't care".

United face rivals Manchester City away on Thursday in an eagerly-anticipated encounter.

"Some other guys don't give everything they have, so that is the point - they have to".

Mourinho, meanwhile, has described it as "common sense" for his public criticism of Manchester United stars if he sees them performing at 'less than 100%'. "It doesn't matter the way they perform".

"And the reality is even in the first season of better years we won already and we have already the chance to do good things until the end of the season".

While Mourinho would not be drawn on the future of the 35-year-old Swedish striker, whose contract with United is due to expire this summer, he did confirm Ibrahimovic had travelled to the United States for surgery.

Pep Guardiola's City are a point and a place above United in fourth, meaning the outcome at the Etihad Stadium could be crucial in terms of Champions League qualification.

"I always feel that the season is very important for me, the players and the club".

Rojo is unlikely to play again this season but United will still hope to conclude the campaign strongly, with Jose Mourinho's side aiming to win the Europa League and secure a top four finish in the Premier League.
