A quiet funeral ceremony in Bristol, Conn., saw friends and family of former England Patriots star tight end Aaron Hernandez express strong feelings of grief and regret Monday.

Hernandez's mother, brother, fiancee and at least one defense attorney were among those who turned out for the invitation-only service in Bristol, Connecticut.

"We didn't want the ongoing investigation to be affected by the turning the notes over", said Massachusetts Secretary of Public Safety, Daniel Bennett.

According to Newsweek, law enforcement sources said one of three notes Hernandez wrote and left in his cell shortly before he hanged himself with a bed sheet on April 19 was to a prison boyfriend, who has been placed on a 24-hour suicide watch.

The contents of the letters remain unknown, but those familiar with the situation say there's little doubt that Hernandez and Kennedy were involved in a romantic relationship. Hernandez committed suicide in his own cell and reportedly left suicide notes.

Hernandez was serving a life sentence at a maximum-security prison for a 2013 murder when he hanged himself in his cell last week.

This month, he was acquitted of two other murders. The death has been ruled a suicide.

Courts in MA have held that when a defendant dies before having an appeal heard, the conviction is vacated.

Hernandez's family has requested for the incident to be a family and private matter.

Separately, an Early spokesman said copies of the notes were being prepared for delivery to the Hernandez relatives as soon as possible on Monday.

Police closed Lincoln Avenue to traffic Monday morning and kept media crews off the property. "Rather than have someone with that incomplete decision that they're guilty, the state chooses to say the conviction is abated as if it never happened". Burial was also private.

Today, Sandra saw lines of cars pulling into O'Brien Funeral Home.

Baez told reporters the attorneys would make a statement on behalf of Hernandez's family, but would not take any questions about the service.

After the MA medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, Hernandez's brain was taken to Boston University, where scientists will study it for any signs of repeated trauma suffered during his years of playing football.
