UEFA, European football's governing body, postponed the game until 6.45 p.m. C.E.T. Wednesday evening, a decision criticized by Dortmund head coach Thomas Tuchel.

"A few minutes after this attack, the only question that was asked was, 'Are you ready to play?'".

"At this time, it is still not clear what the real background to this act is", Dortmund police chief Gregor Lange told a late night news conference in the western German city.

Following the attack, the game was immediately rescheduled for the next night in a decision that made Dortmund feel "powerless", Tuchel said.

Defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, though, said he felt the players had been treated like "animals" by the decision to stage the game so soon after the attack.

German authorities are investigating a line of inquiry which suggests that Islamic State, or at least an individual or group who say they support Islamic State, were behind the attack.

Frankfurt were quick to extend their best wishes to the Spaniard, but solidarity aside, Niko Kovac's men need the points on Saturday having dropped to ninth following a run of nine games without a win.
