Fifty years later, she finished the race a second time, donning the same number: 261. On Monday, at 70 years old, Switzer finished in 4:44:31, wearing the same bib number - 261.
Ms Switzer's run 50 years ago is widely credited with forcing the Boston Marathon to start allowing female runners in 1972. In fact, the received wisdom was that running would rob women of their only attribute - that they could breed - and if a delicate flower was to so much jog to the bus stop her womb might fall out.
This isn't Granville's first marathon either - he used a hand-bike to compete in marathons in Boston, Chicago, Detroit and NY despite his injury but didn't use a bike this time around. It would be the first officially-registered participation by a woman in a marathon.
"Overall, being with Kathrine is the experience of a lifetime and she's so highly sought after, especially here in Boston, because her time is so valuable", said Zeutenhorst, a 2009 Selah graduate and the director of executive events at Central Washington. It wasn't until the race began that officials noticed a woman running among the men.
Kirui said he now planned to concentrate on marathon running after failing to find success in track events.
"There's just something about the city", said Gonsalves, who finished in three hours, 26 minutes and 9 seconds.
"I felt that I ran a good race considering the conditions", Krueger said after his first Boston Marathon.

Browns executive Sashi Brown showed signs during the week that the team was not divided over whom to take with the top pick. They have somehow managed to lose for well over a decade and mismanage their drafts at an improbable rate.
As the years went on she advocated for women to be admitted as full competitors - and kept running more and more marathons. And she competed in Boston several more times, placing second in the women's race in 1975 with a time of 2:51, her personal best.
Switzer's boyfriend, Thomas Miller, body-checked Semple, and she ran on, all the way to the finish line.
"It was great day", Rasmussen said. "I said, 'There you go, Jock, '" she said.
Before the race, she wrote on Facebook: "Today is the race of my life". Kiplagat added Boston to her New York, London and Los Angeles marathon victories. "I" ll post more during the week...but until then, once again, thanks for all the encouragement. "Just imagine what's gonna happen in 50 years!"
Switzer embraced her destiny for her 50th anniversary race and focused on starting healthy and finishing strong.
The San Diego High School graduate, a native of war-torn Eritrea, completed the 26.2 miles in 2 hours and 17 minutes, or 7 minutes and 30 seconds behind victor Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya.
