USA soccer officials had been publicly coy about the possibility of a future World Cup bid since the country lost out to Qatar in the battle for the 2022 tournament at a corruption-tarnished vote in Zurich in 2010.

If the bid finally approved, Mexico will be the first country to host the World Cup three times as they hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup on previous occasions. "We have a unique opportunity to be the first country to host three World Cups".

Montagliani said on Monday that the group will push for all three host countries to receive automatic World Cup qualification. In an unprecedented investment, Qatar is projected to spend more than $200 billion for the 2022 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Mexico federation president in a statement said, "If we are selected to host, it will be an honor to welcome everyone with open arms".

The vote will be the first under Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino, who was elected in February to head the organization. That means more teams, more matches, more stadiums, more infrastructure, more everything.

"The general parameters of this bid are a World Cup of 80 games". The final phase will take place in May 2020, before the next U.S. President elections. The first consists of a strategy and consultation phase which will end next month.

The next location for the showcase soccer tournament will be Russian Federation in 2018, followed by Qatar in 2022.

Another hurdle the bid may face is the political tension between the United States and Mexico. The answer: The U.S. will get 60 with Mexico and Canada each hosting 10. "This will be an extraordinarily successful World Cup on financial and economic grounds".

"The president of the United States is fully supportive and encouraged us to have this joint bid", he stressed. Usually, the host country is automatically included in the field, and the USA and Mexico tend to qualify without help. The Copa America Centenario - held in the United States last summer - stages its final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but there are no shortage of grounds, in various cities, that could fit the bill.

When 2026 comes round, there will have been 32 years and seven World Cups since the 1994 one held in the US with Europe (3), Asia (2), Africa (1) and South America (1) having served as host. However, the European Championship has been hosted by multiple countries at the same time on a handful of occasions.
