Trump orders review of visa program for highly skilled workers

"Donald Trump's rhetoric on this is completely hollow because he's a shameless hypocrite", said Andrew Bates, spokesman for American Bridge.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday ordered a review of the USA visa program for bringing high-skilled foreign workers into the country, putting technology firms and the outsourcing companies that serve them on notice that possible changes may be ahead.

The executive order targeting the visa programme popular with Indian tech professionals was signed yesterday by President Trump.

In his new directive, the president is targeting the H-1B visa program, which the White House says undercuts US workers by bringing in large numbers of cheaper, foreign workers and driving down wages.

Beyond that, the administration could scrap the current lottery approach and give priority to higher-paying jobs, thereby weeding out lower-paying, entry-level positions. The Chamber of Commerce added that it would be a "mistake to close the door on high-skilled workers" who can contribute to the growth and expansion of American businesses and make the US more competitive around the world.

Representatives for the Trump Organization did not return request for comment on the matter.

Trump's speech and signing ceremony Tuesday afternoon followed his appearance at the Snap-On Tools headquarters in Wisconsin, a state he narrowly won despite its usual role as part of the Democratic Party's blue firewall in the upper Midwest. The president has found himself facing questions about reversals involving USA military actions in Syria and Afghanistan, growing tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and a declaration that China does not manipulate its currency.

US Govt.'s biggest protectionism move: "Buy American, Hire American" order has been finally approved by President Trump.

Indian IT companies have been accused of misusing the H-1B visa regime, which they have consistently denied. Many Trump-branded products are manufactured overseas, mostly in China.

Canada: Trump wrong when he says dairy practices unfair
About 70 dairy producers in both Wisconsin and NY are affected by the decision. He suggested it has stalled his attempt to renegotiate NAFTA.

A Pew Research Center poll released the day before Trump's visit found the president's national approval rating unchanged from two months ago at 39 percent.

The Reuters report came in the same week that the White House released its "Buy American and Hire American" initiative aimed launching a review of trade deals and immigration policies negotiated by his predecessors that the President claims unfairly disadvantage American corporate competitiveness and hurt usa worker wages.

The latest order is regarded as an attempt to improve the implementation of existing laws. The government procurement section did.

Trump's attitude toward presidential power is nearly the equivalent of treating everyone who criticizes any of his actions or programs similar to the way he treated contestants on his "Apprentice" program.

"We have no problem with measures to protect American workers, but they should be made applicable to all firms applying for short-term skilled visas, including H-1B", it reiterated. Trump reversed himself on both positions in interviews last week.

The alternate solutions for the Indian outsourcing industry are: Investing "near shore centres" - facilities close to the United States; focus on local hiring in America; and to work virtually, which is becoming easier with the wider adoption of cloud services and greater digitisation, the paper said. "They voted to bring back their jobs and to bring back their dreams".

Ronil Hira, a professor in public policy at Howard University and a critic of the H-1B program, said Trump's planned order is "better than nothing". The visas are meant to go to foreign nationals in occupations that generally require specialized knowledge, such as science, engineering or computer programming. "And "Hire American' generally refers to the body of law and policy concerning how our immigration, visa and guest worker programs are operated to ensure proper protections for American workers". The visas are in high demand and given out by lottery. "Nothing is being proposed that would impact or change the FY18 H-1B lottery that is now underway", Nasscom said in a statement. As ordered by the Congress, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) consistently issued 65,000 H-1B visas and another 20,000 to those candidates having aces and higher degrees from a US educational organization.
