Muhammad, who's black, was arrested Tuesday after police say he killed three other white men at random.
He and Randalls were friends for 15 years after bonding on a job over a love of music and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Police then captured Muhammad who gave up and said he ditched his gun, which is still missing at this hour. According to the authorities, he told the police that he hates Caucasian people.
The first victim in a horrific racially motivated shooting in Fresno, California has been identified as 34-year-old Zackary Randalls.
Mark Gassett, 37, of Fresno, had just picked up groceries at a Catholic Charities building when he was gunned down.
Police said Randalls was a father to a 3 and 4-year-old, and that he was on a ride along when gunman Kori Ali Muhammad opened fire. As he was taken into custody, he yelled "Allahu Akbar" - or God is Great in Arabic.
She says she was shocked to hear that he was connected to Tuesday's shootings.
The suspect, 39-year-old, Kori Ali Muhammad shot 16 rounds from a large-calibre handgun in 90 seconds in the shooting spree, police chief Jerry Dyer said, adding that Muhammad was also wanted in connection with the fatal shooting last week of an unarmed security guard at a Motel 6 in Fresno. "I felt for a pulse and not that I know what I'm doing but I couldn't find one and someone turned him over and he was very obviously dead", said Aaron Van Curen.
VP Pence issues another warning to North Korea over failed missile test
But confrontation and conflict will not resolve the problem, and may worsen it as North Korea is nuclear and unpredictable. Pence's visit, full of Cold War symbolism, came amid increasing tensions and heated rhetoric on the Korean Peninsula.
Police had put out a news release hours before the shootings Tuesday, saying that Muhammad was armed and unsafe and wanted over the shooting death of a security guard at a Motel 6 last week.
She saw her son a few days before he died and spontaneously told him she loved him and was proud of him.
His public defender raised questions on whether Muhammad was mentally fit to stand trial, noting that on several occasions, he had "appeared eccentric with some freaky beliefs" and appeared to have hallucinations. "We offer condolences for the victims, we pray for the victims and their families".
In a statement, Fresno Mayor Lee Brand said: "This is a sad day for us all". Fresno officials have been calling for prayer for the victim's family and for the community. "They really don't want us and our ancient ways".
He also "suffered auditory hallucinations and had at least two prior mental health hospitalizations, " according to court documents.
Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, told the Times that Muhammad's posts were eerily reminiscent of terms used by the Nation of Islam, which has been labeled a racist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
After an order committing him to a facility in October 2005, he was later found competent for trial in 2006.
A federal judge later declared him mentally fit in 2006 and he subsequently served 92 months in prison.
