While South Korean tech juggernaut Samsung's future may rest on the success of its sparkly new Galaxy S8 smartphone, compatriot LG announced on Friday that its estimated first-quarter operating profit rose 82 per cent to its highest in almost eight years.
It is the group's best quarterly profit in nearly four years.
Greenpeace East Asia campaigner Jude Lee said (via BBC): "While we welcome this news, Samsung must share as soon as possible more detailed timelines on when it will implement its promises, as well as how it intends to change its production system to make sure this never happens again".
Details about the successor to last year's Galaxy Note 7 are quite scarce, but some reports state that the smartphone will have 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. He added that sales of mid-to-low tier smartphones also helped the mobile business remain profitable. Previously, the smartphone business was the company's main contributor.
