China Warns of 'Storm Clouds Gathering' in US-North Korea Standoff

The threat to "defeat enemies with nuclear justice" was issued during the country's 105th Day of the Sun parade, in which the socialist state celebrated the anniversary of its founder Kim Il-Sung's birth.

This Saturday marks the 105th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, "eternal president" of North Korea, and grandfather of Kim Jong Un.

It said North Korea will face strong punishment it will find hard to withstand if it makes a significant provocation, such as another nuclear test or an intercontinental ballistic missile launch.

Now, a U.S. Navy carrier strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson is moving into waters near the Korean peninsula.

"The bottom line is North Korea has got to change its behavior, that is an agreed position among the global community, nations that are working together on this", Secretary of Defense James Mattis said. "It would be nice if the bomb could frighten Pyongyang, but its actual impact may just be the opposite", read the editorial that said Trump "may go down in history as the "war president".

The North has said it has developed a missile that could strike the US mainland, but officials say that ability may take more time for development.

China's national airline, Air China, suspended flights from Beijing to the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, from late today, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said.

The dire warning comes amid fears that North Korea is readying another nuclear test, possibly as soon as this weekend.

Mr Trump and China's President Xi Jinping have been in contact by phone since their summit last week in Florida, and Reuters quotes United States officials as saying tougher economic sanctions against North Korea are also being considered. Senior U.S. officials have said the United States is prepared to strike North Korea if they believe the isolated country will carry out the test, and have two destroyers capable of launching a missile attack positioned in the region.

Choe Ryong Hae said President Donald Trump was guilty of "creating a war situation" on the Korean Peninsula by dispatching US forces to the region.

Newspapers this morning expressed fears of nuclear tests as Pyongyang warned it was prepared to take "the toughest action" against U.S. "military hysteria".

President Trump hit the golf course Friday, as he and his aides braced for what North Korea calls a "big event", possibly some kind of nuclear test.

Trump has urged China to step up measures to prevent North Korea from carrying out more nuclear and weapons tests, and threatened us intervention if Beijing-Pyongyang talks falter.

Han Song-ryol also insists that "It is not the DPRK but the USA and (President Donald) Trump that makes problems".
