Anantnag bypolls postponed to 25 May: Election Commission

"We are anxious about Anantnag polls because it is a more sensitive area", the police official said.

The Chief Electoral Officer Jammu and Kashmir Shantmanu said that re-polling would be held at 38 violence-hit polling stations.

Reports suggest polling stations were attacked and EVM machines were also vandalised at many places.

The poll turnout was only 6.5%.Earlier on Monday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday had deferred the Anantnag by-polls till May 25.Earlier, it was scheduled to be held on April 12.

Internet service remained suspended for the third successive day by the Indian state in view of blocking access to information over human rights abuse by the Indian army in the valley.

Besides, chief minister Mehbooba Mufti's brother and the PDP's candidate for Anantnag, Tasaduq Mufti, told reporters that the state government had written to the poll panel that elections couldn't be held in the current climate of unrest.
