US, Canada, Mexico ask Federation Internationale de Football Association for faster World Cup bid process

While the USA remained front and centre during Monday's press event in New York City, Montagliani was asked to address Canada's lack of World Cup-ready venues.

Although Gulati made the case that any of the nations could have individually hosted the expanded 48-team tournament, the Federation Internationale de Football Association council member laid out the rationale for setting the stage for the first World Cup to be hosted by three countries.

Under the current proposal, the US would host the majority of the games, 60, with the other 20 split evenly between Mexico and Canada.

US President Donald Trump has controversially promised to build a border wall between the United States of America and Mexico but Gulati said that President Trump is "supportive" of the bid and had "encouraged" it.

Canada, the United States and Mexico have launched their bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup.

"That's not to say there won't be", he said, reminding Postmedia that nations from the AFC (Asia) and UEFA (Europe) confederations can't bid to host 2026 due to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups being staged in Russian Federation and Qatar, respectively. That leave the North American bid looking in a very strong position.

The U.S. will take the bulk of the tournament, with 60 of the 80 games in the United States of America, and discussions have taken place to schedule group games in similar time zones which run through all three countries to minimize travel.

The proposal for the first World Cup with the field expanded from 32 to 48 teams is that the USA hosts all the games from the quarterfinals, the AP reported.

Tillerson Meets with Putin
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited Russian Federation on Tuesday after meeting with leaders of the G-7 nations in Italy. Western countries blamed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces for the attack, which killed more than 80 people.

When will Federation Internationale de Football Association decide on who gets to host the 2026 World Cup? What's more, the proposal calls for the U.S.to stage every game from the quarterfinals onward. However - the rumour mill is flying that the thinking heads at CONCACAF, the regional federation of which all three nations are members, will be asking FIFA to fast track the bid for acceptance. "Whatever we need to do to make sure that we navigate that, we'll do it to make sure that we get a World Cup in Concacaf". That change came in the wake of allegations of wrongdoing surrounding Qatar's successful bid for the 2022 event, in which the tiny, oil-rich nation beat out proposals from the U.S., Japan and South Korea.

The three countries have more than two years to sort out the many details that go into a bid and are exacerbated by one of this magnitude.

The bid was announced at a news conference earlier today in New York City. For the 2014 World Cup, Brazil had a total of 12 stadiums used as sites for games.

The proposal would be for the U.S. to host 60 matches, with 10 games each in Canada and Mexico. Mexico and Canada will split the remaining 20 games equally.

Canadas largest arena is Commonwealth Stadium (56,000) in Edmonton, Alberta, which opened in 1978 and was renovated ahead of the 2015 Womens World Cup.

He acknowledged Mexico would not have been able to place a solo bid on a tournament that, in 2026, will expand to 48 teams from 32 and grow by 16 matches.

All three countries boast world-class stadiums that would be suitable venues for the tournament.
