US can handle N/Korea alone, Trump tells China

With a US aircraft carrier group steaming to the area, tensions on the Korean peninsula grew this week amid concern that the reclusive North could soon conduct its sixth nuclear test or more missile launches in defiance of United Nations sanctions. North Korea has in the past marked its April 15 holiday with tightly choreographed military parades.

North Korea is working to develop nuclear-tipped missiles capable of hitting the United States and officials, including leader Kim Jong Un, have indicated an intercontinental ballistic missile test or something similar could be coming. "We know that this is a unsafe situation for the South Korean people and the 10 million people there".

A senior Japanese diplomat said it appeared Washington was seeking to press North Korea to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis. The North vowed to take tough counteractions, calling the dispatch a "reckless" act.

China has ordered its trading companies to return coal from North Korea after banning imports of North Korean coal in February, according to trading sources.

Saturday is a major North Korean holiday - a time often celebrated with a missile or nuclear test. CBS News is there ahead of the event. It's widely believed that another launch or even a nuclear test is imminent as North Korea continues to build its nuclear program.

Mr Trump's sabre-rattling follows a pair of tweets he fired off on Tuesday, saying "North Korea is looking for trouble".

North Korea's rapidly developing missile and military nuclear programs have unnerved Washington.

Mr Xi did not make a public commitment to tighten pressure on North Korea after a face-to-face meeting with Mr Trump in Florida last week. As a result, US planners are not taking any chances when it comes to stepping-up missile defense technology and preparedness.
