Sergio Garcia of Spain celebrates after defeating Justin Rose (not pictured) of England on the first playoff hole during the final round of the 2017 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 9, 2017 in Augusta, Georgia.
Garcia is the third Spaniard to win the Masters after Ballesteros, who won in 1980 and 1983, and Jose Maria Olazabal, who triumphed in 1994 and 1999.
He also praised Garcia's great performance developed in the first four rounds of the competition and said that the golfer had written a golden chapter in one of the major championships in men's professional golf.
Sergio Garcia ended almost two decades of major heartbreak when he beat Justin Rose in a playoff to win the US Masters on Sunday on what would have been the 60th birthday of his hero, the late Seve Ballesteros.
"We were cheering each other", Garcia said.
So it was heartfelt congratulations that Rose gave Garcia on the 18 green when it was over.
"I knew what I was capable of doing and I believed I could do it", Garcia said. This time, he capitalized on Rose's mistake, had two putts to win and dropped in the birdie for added theatrics.
He proceeded to make a miraculous par, remaining only two strokes behind after Rose missed a short birdie putt. "It's nice for him now to have that monkey off his back and I was very pleased for him".
Turkey: Tests Prove Sarin Used in Syria Chemical Attack
Until Monday, U.S. officials had said they weren't sure whether Russian Federation or Syria operated the drone. And then the evidence comes out, and we see exactly what it is and we know exactly what the environment was.
"I don't know if it hasn't sunk in or something but it doesn't feel that different". He realized he has a "beautiful life" even if he never won a major.
Sergio Garcia is a major champion, and that reality is still reverberating through the golf and sporting world the day after the 2017 Masters. "I would have liked to be the right part of it, but nevertheless I hope it's a good one".
Garcia said he thought of the late Seve Ballesteros while overcoming setbacks that would have derailed his less confident self. "I said it all week".
Sunday afternoon at the Masters in Augusta, Garcia was two shots behind leader Justin Rose going to the 510-yard par 5 13th hole, and looked to be about to collapse altogether when he bounced his tee shot off a tree and into an azalea bush. "You deserve it all amigo!"
Rose birdied the par 3 16th and Sergio had a putt to tie, but missed it.
When asked about the Grand Slam, Garcia said, "You can't win them all if you don't win the first one". Everybody works in a workforce and if you had 150 guys in your workforce, there's some guys you get on with and there's some guys you don't necessarily.
"I'm not going to lie - it's not the golf course that I'm most comfortable in, because I've become more of a fader than a drawer of the ball, and this golf course is asking you to hit a lot of draws".
