President Donald Trump has put North Korea "clearly on notice" that he will not tolerate certain actions but will not telegraph USA moves in advance, a White House spokesman says.
Although he didn't get into specifics, Trump spoke about his decision to send the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier and its battle group to waters off the Korean Peninsula.
There is speculation that the nation could be preparing a missile launch, or even another nuclear test, to mark the 105th birthday anniversary of its founder Kim Il-sung on Saturday.
However Mr Yang, who was heavily involved in the six-party talks which started in 2003 and included China, Japan, North Korea, Russia, South Korea, and the U.S., claimed Beijing's influence was overstated.
North Korea often uses respective foreign media representatives visits to project new construction projects.
Xi also said that China and the USA will work to ensure that Trump's visit to China later this year could achieve "fruitful" results, Xinhua reported.
"China's best-case scenario, what it would really like to happen, would be a liberalized regime in the North, akin to some of the reforms that took place (in China) in the 1980s, so introducing economic reform, removing the concentrated power of the Kim family", Neill said.

That parade will likely include North Korea's banned missiles, which President Kim Jong Un has tested several times since Mr. Trump took office. The vast amount of coal that comes out of North Korea going to China. But there are states that have denied dialogue.
North Korea is one of Trump's most hard national security challenges.
Some analysts believe that dialogue without any pre-conditions is the solution, but Neill says that is highly unlikely.
Given these developments, Japan sees any American military action against North Korea as having a tremendous impact on its own national security.
