And according to Tillerson, the Chinese president told Trump that he "understood that such a response was necessary when people are killing children" and expressed "appreciation" that the president took the time to explain the details of and goal behind the strike on the Syrian airfield. "We'll be making a lot of additional progress", Trump said after talks with Xi at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Mnuchin said the discussions focused on creating a "more balanced economic relationship, specifically on trade".
Chinese President Xi Jinping offered a degree of support for the US missile strikes on Syria Thursday evening, according to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
The Chinese will try to deter Trump from following through on campaign promises to impose tariffs against China and label the country a currency manipulator, according to deLisle, the University of Pennsylvania professor.
Mr Tillerson said Mr Trump had accepted Mr Xi's invitation to visit China and that they also agreed to upgrade a US-China dialogue by putting the two presidents at the head of the forum.
During the campaign, he pledged to stop what he described as the theft of American jobs to China, and last week tweeted ahead of their meeting that it would be "difficult" as the USA should "no longer have trade deficits" with the country.
Mr Trump spoke publicly of progress on a range of issues in his first US-China summit - as did several of his top aides - but they provided few concrete specifics other than China's agreement to work together to narrow disagreements and find common ground for cooperation.
The news shows also broadcast images of the two leaders sitting side by side at a vast dining table set with candelabra, and of Trump's 5-year-old granddaughter Arabella singing in Chinese to Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan before dinner. The options all represent big changes in United States foreign policy.

The highly anticipated U.S.
"The two sides noted the urgency of the threat of North Korea's weapons program, reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, and committed to fully implement U.N. Security Council resolutions", Tillerson said. It was the first direct USA assault on the Russian-backed government of Bashar al-Assad in six years of civil war.
North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear missile capable of striking the United States is the most pressing issue in the relationship.
Tillerson said Xi agreed with Trump that North Korea's nuclear advances had reached a "very serious stage".
