Google Pixel 4 facial recognition has a major flaw

Again there were statements on security and privacy that Google is going to ensure with new products.

Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will be available in Clearly White, Just Black, and "limited edition" Oh So Orange colour options.

But what's more concerning is the disclaimer that your Pixel 4 can be unlocked by "someone else if it's held up to your face, even if your eyes are closed".

The facial recognition works very well, even at a complex angle or in the dark, but also works when your eyes are closed.

It means that if the Pixel 4's owner is asleep, unconscious or dead, someone can still pick up their phone and access the owner's information without their knowledge, or even access locked apps or pay for items since these can be approved with facial recognition too.

San Francisco: Google has recently launched its latest Pixel 4 series smartphones with face unlock for biometric authentication in NY.

Prince William and Kate Middleton arrived at Chitral
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stopped by the Badshahi Mosque before heading to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital . Afterwards, the duke and duchess went to the National Cricket Academy where both of them tried their hand at batting.

Lockdown, Google's suggested solution for this problem, disables all biometric authentication systems on the phone meaning whomever's trying to access your device needs your screen unlock pattern/pin/pass to get into the device. It's more secure, but it makes the iPhone harder to unlock using Face ID.

The bug is not likely to tarnish the Pixel 4's launch, a high-end device coming loaded with lots of new features - see here for an in-depth Pixel 4 breakdown.

Google recently announced its Pixel 4 series during its annual Made by Google event.

Apple's Face ID, in contrast, checks if the user is "alert" and actively looking at the phone before it unlocks.

While Google was busy showcasing its latest devices yesterday, it was also, more quietly, pulling the plug on a few others. Further, there is a top bezel on the front that houses the Soli radar chip, the speaker, a single front shooter, and the suite of sensors for face unlock. Plus, according to the Verge, Google has said that the design of the phone will improve as time goes by with software updates.
