President Trump says a US warship destroyed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions between the two countries.
Trump told an event in the White House that the drone had flown to within 1,000 yards (meters) of the USS Boxer and had ignored "multiple calls to stand down".
Trump said the USA "reserves the right to defend our personnel, our facilities and interests", and called on other nations to "protect their ships as they go through the strait and to work with us in the future".
The ship, the USS Boxer, was on a routine patrol when the drone approached within 1,000 yards, he said.
It also comes a month after Iran shot down a $110 million U.S. Navy surveillance drone flying in worldwide waters over the Strait of Hormuz.
Mr Trump has called on other countries to condemn Iran and protect their own ships. The president called it the latest "hostile" action by Iran.
"The U.S. reserves the right to defend personnel, facilities, interests", he said.
Iran claimed the U.S. drone violated its airspace; the Pentagon denied this.
"The drone was immediately destroyed", he added.

Jonathan Hoffman, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement that the Boxer "was in worldwide waters conducting a planned inbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz" at the time of the attack.
Earlier on Thursday, Iran announced that it had seized a foreign tanker and its 12 crew members for smuggling one million liters (264,000 US gallons) of Iranian fuel.
On Thursday, the Boxer transited through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway where one fifth of the world's oil passes.
State TV reported on July 18 that the tanker was transporting fuel from Iranian smugglers to foreign customers and was intercepted south of Iran's Lark Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
It's part of the Trump administration's response to growing tensions with Iran.
Washington has called for an global "coalition" to patrol the strait.
The state media later published footage of Iranian speedboats circling around the Panamanian-flagged Riah tanker.
Iran's Foreign Ministry subsequently said Iran went to the rescue of the tanker after it broke down, and then towed it to shore for repairs.
Washington earlier said Iran must immediately release the tanker it said it had seized.
