Indonesian actor and martial artist Joe Taslim has been cast in the role Sub-Zero for New Line's upcoming live-action reboot of the video game by Midway Games. And you must remember, this is only the first of what should be many casting announcements. While The Raid - in which Taslim portrays Jaka, the sergeant who leads the, um, raid - is well-known to die-hard fans of action cinema, it wasn't exactly a box-office buster, and it did little to increase the visibility of its cast stateside.
Paul W.S. Anderson helmed the original "Mortal Kombat" movie in 1995, which saw Christopher Lambert play master of electricity Raiden and was also produced by Kasanoff. While he debuted in The Raid, he's also appeared in Fast & Furious 6, Star Trek Beyond and The Night Comes for Us.
Sub-Zero - who can control ice for attack and defence - is one of the franchise's most popular fighters and within the games' storyline is the nemesis of fellow ninja Scorpion. However, if Sub-Zero is making an appearance then it should be expected that Scorpion will be there with him.
The leak also described Sonya as "the attractive, brainy blonde writer who chases the prophecy of Mortal Kombat", and Raiden as "the immortal thunder God and protector of the Earth realm, who leads and trains the Earth team in the Underworld", but who is aged just 14.
'Suits' will address Duchess Meghan's character in final season
Obviously fuming on the morning show, Piers ranted: "This is so ridiculous, this obsession her and Harry have about privacy". However, whilst she was there, it's been reported her bodyguards warned fans not to take pictures of the Duchess of Sussex.
Expect further casting news soon.
Originally developed by Midway Games, the martial arts mainstay is closing in on an all-time sales total of 50 million copies sold. The movie is slated to be released March 5, 2021.
The series, a fantasy fighting game featuring a large lineup of characters from different realms of a fictional universe, released its latest game, Mortal Kombat 11, in April.
