In his resignation Gandhi wrote, "Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party".
In his four-page letter, Gandhi said the Congress Party must radically transform itself in order to help "reclaim and resuscitate our institutions".
In light of Gandhi clarifying that he is no longer the party president, the senior-most general secretary of the Congress, Motilal Vora, could call a meeting of the CWC as early as next week to decide on the next course of action.
Mr Gandhi also lost his own seat in his family constituency of Amethi in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, though he is still a MP because he won a second seat in the southern state of Kerala. Given that 70 per cent of India is below the age of 40 years, I would suggest that the party president be someone who can connect with the youth and their problems.
"I have been closely observing Rahul Gandhi and I see a lot of faults in his head balance while taking hard-hitting decisions - which he ends up not taking". Mr Gandhi will remain as the chief till the CWC take a call on his resignation.
In 2014, when Gandhi was first made the face of the party's campaign during the national elections, it suffered its worst-ever electoral loss, winning just 44 seats to the 282 of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP.
The 49-year-old, who was seeking to become the fourth member of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty to become prime minister, had only been Congress president since December 2017.

Talking to mediapersons after the hearing, Rahul Gandhi said that it was a fight of ideology and he would continue with ten times more vigour.
