At around 3:45 PM local time, North Korean leader Kim and President Trump met and shook hands at the military demarcation line (MDL), which is the line dividing the two Koreas.
Together with Kim, Trump crossed the MDL into the DPRK side of Panmunjom, becoming the first sitting USA leader to step foot on the DPRK territory.
The statement by North Korea's first Vice-Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui came as a response to Donald Trump's offer of a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in DMZ.
President Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong-un talked for about 50 minutes at the DMZ; President Moon was not present at the meeting.
In a manner similar to Moon's summit with Kim in April a year ago, Trump and Kim met at the MDL, respectively on the South Korean and North Korean side.
While in Japan, Trump said at a news conference that he was "literally visiting the DMZ", but wasn't sure whether Kim would meet him.
The fracas intensified as reporters tried to enter a room inside the Freedom House on the southern side of Panmunjom where Mr Trump and Kim Jong-un were meeting after exchanging initial handshakes on the border. "A handshake means a lot", he added.
Mr Trump earlier had his first glimpse of North Korea from an observation post in the Korean Demilitarised Zone.
Trump also downplayed the significance of North Korea's missile launches in May saying that they are "very small missiles, practically every country has" and added that long-range ballistic missiles are what concerns the US.
Their first meeting a year ago took place in a blaze of publicity, the first-ever encounter between a leader of the nuclear-armed North and a sitting United States president, whose forces and their allies fought each other to a stalemate in the 1950-53 Korean War.
Trump later said he had invited Kim to the US.

Asked to address reports linking him to National Basketball Association job offers, Ujiri stresses that his family loves Toronto. Ujiri said their comfort level was noticeably off around the trade deadline, so they got together for a long discussion.
"It's good to see you again".
Trump's summit with Kim in Vietnam earlier this year collapsed without an agreement for denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
The two leaders were seen shaking hands with Mr Kim applauding during their meeting.
Trump, ever the showman, sought to one-up his predecessors with a Kim meeting. North Korean media reports were silent on the matter on Sunday.
But Trump likes to be unpredictable and has made clear repeatedly in recent days that he is eager to restart negotiations aimed at persuading North Korea to eliminate its nuclear arsenal. "I believe that this will have a positive influence in all our discussions in the future", Kim said.
Trump briefly crossed the border into North Korea after greeting Kim.
"It's just a step and probably a step in the right direction", said Trump. "I salute the protagonists, with a prayer that such a significant gesture will be a further step on the road to peace, not only on that peninsula, but for the good of the entire world", he said.
Trump tweeted the comment Saturday morning from Osaka, Japan, where he is attending the Group of 20 summit.
"Peace and security on the Korean Peninsula will entirely depend on the United States future attitude, and the DPRK will gird itself for every possible situation", KCNA quoted Kim as saying in April.
North Korea called it an "interesting suggestion" but made no immediate commitment.
The troops include both US solders as well as South Korean troops.
