That proposition of hardware coupled with a catalog that's over 2,000 games deep is one reason that fans are still choosing Nintendo Switch as their platform of choice. With Sword and Shield likely bringing the total number of Pokemon either close to or over 900, balancing seems like a particularly tricky task, and limiting the number of Pokemon that can be used in Sword and Shield ultimately makes that easier. With the Pokemon Home cloud service set to be released next year, you might wonder sometime soon why don't all transfers work with the cloud. The company has put restrictions on Pokemon before - for instance limiting players to using only Pokemon from the Unova region in Black and White until they entered the post-game - those were generally only temporary measures. What that means is that if a Pokemon isn't already obtainable within Sword and Shield, you won't be able to transfer it over from Pokemon Home. That's not the case though.
During a Nintendo Treehouse chat with the folks working on the game, producer Junichi Masuda revealed that players will be limited to transfering Pokemon that exist within Galar, the game's region.
