One person was killed and at least seven injured when an unidentified gunman fired indiscriminately at a crowd participating in afternoon cookouts in Baltimore city, Maryland, on Sunday.

Baltimore Police are investigating two shootings that happened Sunday night.

Harrison said the shooting appeared to be "extremely targeted" but he did not immediately elaborate on a possible motive.

Harrison said that one man ran toward the Perkins Square Baptist Church and was found dead later.

It was unclear whether the barbecues were related, Harrison said.

"It wasn't anything dealing with the church".

According to CNN, authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying the gunman and more potential victims.

"When these things happen, they don't happen by happenstance. People know who's doing these shootings".

Police have closed down the area surrounding the crime scene.

Police say the other six victims are adults ranging from 27 to 58 years of age.

"What we believe is that there was a second shooter, perhaps firing back, but it is still unknown", Harrison said.

Baltimore has been plagued by drug-fuelled violence for decades and it has always been considered one of the nation's most violent cities.

Based on the presence of two sets of shell casings on the scene, detectives are also trying to determine if another person returned fire, the commissioner said.
