Government recognition finally came Devendra Jhajharia's way as he Thursday became the first Paralympian to be recommended for India's highest sporting honour - the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna - along with celebrated hockey player Sardar Singh. The awards selection committee has recommended both Jhajharia and Sardar to be considered for the award jointly.
Mariyappan Thangavelu, who won a gold at the Rio Paralympics, and Varun Bhati, the bronze medallist at the same event, were among the 17 athletes recommended for the Arjuna Award. Jhajharia is the first paralympian to be recommended for the prestigious award. The 35-year-old, a left-hand amputee, is the only Indian para athlete to have won two gold medals in the Paralympics, the earlier one being the yellow metal he won in 2004 Athens. When you get an award it means that government is recognising your hard work and achievements.
Cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara and Harmanpreet Kaur, Paralympic medallists Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Bhati, and golfer SSP Chawrasia include in the list of 17 Arjuna awradees this year.
