Drivers on the motorway managed to capture incredible footage of the extraordinary moment on camera.

A small plane has made an incredible emergency landing in the United States, surprising motorists as it weaved through traffic on a busy Long Island highway. The Cessna, registered to a Northport man, touched down on Sunrise Highway in Yaphank near exit 57S around 1 p.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna C206 made a "precautionary landing" on the westbound lane of Sunrise Highway in North Bellport Wednesday afternoon.

"It wasn't good, but here I am", O'Donnell told ABC 7's NJ Burkett.

There was only one person on board, pilot Jim O'Donnell, who escaped unharmed and was praised for managing to land safely.

O'Donnell knew he was unlikely to reach his destination of Eagles Nest Airport in New Jersey, and was forced to take matters into his own hands to avoid disaster.

The pilot was uninjured and the plane undamaged in the incident, and the FAA was unsure what caused the unplanned descent. Unusual incident took the driver of one auto.

No injuries were reported, Miglino said, adding that the landing was successful. The plane was towed down the highway to Brookhaven Airport.
