Not intentionally, at least. They'd been watching their mom drive.

According to KSTU, the 5-year-old knew his mother kept an extra set of keys under the mat in her vehicle, and the boys wanted to visit animals on their grandfather's farm seven miles away.

So when the brothers wanted to visit the animals on their grandfather's farm about 7 miles away, they hatched a plan to trek over on their own.

After deputies arrived at the scene, the boys led them back to their home to their mother, who was surprised to see them, as she never noticed that they - or her auto - had gone missing.

The pair made it three miles (4.8km) down the road and successfully navigated multiple turns.

23-year-old woman caught with $2M worth of crystal meth
Emma, an APD K-9, gave a positive alert to the Avenger, where officers found the liquid crystal meth hidden in jugs, police said. Officers reportedly stopped 23-year-old Seline Lizbeth Ayala of Laredo for going too fast on Interstate 35 on July 12.

The boys made it almost halfway to their destination before driving off the road down an embankment, Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese said.

The brothers were checked out at a hospital but had no injuries. Homeowners in the area saw the crash and called police, KSTU reported.

No charges have been filed against the mother, but Mr Deweese says authorities are working with the prosecutor's office and Child Protective Services.

Deweese told news outlets deputies didn't find the mother until almost an hour after the crash.

Deweese said the mother was surprised when her sons showed up with the deputy at her front door. Aside from the 5- and 2-year-olds potentially locking themselves in their mother's auto - risking vehicular heatstroke - these boys could've killed themselves or someone else on the road. She hadn't known they were missing, KSTU reported.
