South Africa pull off last-ball heist to square series

SOMERSET bowler Craig Overton could be set to make his senior England debut in Taunton after captain Eoin Morgan confirmed each of the uncapped players in the T20 squad would feature in the three-match series against South Africa.

The pair had put on 110 in under 12 overs when Bairstow, having made 47 from 37 balls, chipped Chris Morris to Farhaan Behardien at mid-on to prompt the first signs of concern in England's ranks.

But when Roy was given out obstructing the field - the first time this had happened in a T20 worldwide - the innings fell away.

Roy, who endured a disappointing Champions Trophy, played himself back into form with some well-timed drives and became the first player on either side to reach a half-century when he launched Tabraiz Shamsi into the Sir Ian Botham Stand for six.

Bairstow fell first, chipping man-of-the-match Chris Morris (two for 18) to mid-on.

Then came the turning point.

The incident happened when Roy veered off a straight course and was hit by a throw from Andile Phehlukwayo when short of his ground.

South African players appealed and the on-field umpires sent the decision to TV umpire Robinson, who, after watching replays, rightly gave Roy out. The last couple of seasons I've bowled a lot of overs and that may have limited my pace but I think I've gained a yard.

"Everyone in the changing room thought it could go either way, so it's not massively controversial", Morgan told reporters. He was looking at the fielder when he made the move but had his back to the ball when it struck him instantly.

England got off to the ideal start thanks to Curran, who had an instant impact after coming on in the fourth over to bowl Reeza Hendricks with his second ball in worldwide cricket to leave South Africa on 25 for one. They restricted South Africa to 142 for three after Proteas skipper AB de Villiers won the toss.

Curran troubled the batsmen from his very first ball in worldwide cricket, forcing a top edge from Reeza Hendricks which only just evaded Dawson as he ran back from backward short leg.

And star batsman de Villiers, as he so often does, upped the tempo further, with four sixes in his 20-ball innings. David Miller followed shortly after, nicking a Plunkett cutter to Buttler for eight and in the next over, the 15th, de Villiers was dismissed by David Willey after hitting the previous ball out of the ground with a ramp shot over fine leg.

One of those sixes sailed over the stadium and into the river.

"There is a final to play on Sunday and we are going to be fighting as hard as we can to win that game".
