Former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker says Helmut Kohl's death means "Germany has lost one of its greatest leaders, the United States has lost one of its best friends and the world has lost a ringing voice for freedom".
Kohl remained Chancellor of Germany for the longest period in the history of the country.
However, in early 1990, there was a real turnaround in the Soviet leader's mood and Gorbachev admits now that Germany's reunification became a purely practical objective.
He refused to reveal where the money had come from, saying he had given the donors his "Ehrenwort", or word of honour, not to disclose their names.

He was also instrumental in developing relations between Germany and Russia, Naina Yeltsina, the widow of first Russian President Boris Yeltsin, told the media.
"All that has happened in the past 27 years from then until today would have been unimaginable without Helmut Kohl", said Merkel, dressed in black.
Mr Juncker was the prime minister of Luxembourg during some of Kohl's time as chancellor of Germany.
Kohl, along with former European Commission chief Jacques Delors and Jean Monnet, founding father of the European project, are the only three people the EU has made Honorary Citizens of Europe, an honour bestowed for extraordinary work to promote European cooperation.
"He was someone who supported me, was kind and had an ability to see into other people's lives", Juncker said.
