A three-year-old, 125-pound Neapolitan Mastiff has won the 29th annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest. The Neapolitan mastiff had been taken in by the charity after her previous owner tried to sell her on U.S. listing site Craigslist.
Martha from Sebastopol was rescued when she was almost blind from neglect by the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project in Sonoma County, where the contest was held.
The wrinkly and drool-covered rescue pup beat out the more traditional winners of old, tiny and hairless dogs to claim top prize of USA $1,500 along with a trophy and a trip to NY.
She's also described as big, lazy, homely and gassy. And a world champion.
Throughout her impressive win Martha laid on her side with her skin drooping onto the ground, waiting to return home where her raucous snores leave her banned from the bedroom. Since being taken in, Martha has undergone surgery and her eyesight has improved.
No doubt about it. Martha is ugly.
Russell paces Cubs to 11-1 win over Marlins
Either way I think it is right we spend a little bit of time talking about the most expensive pitcher in Cubs history, Jon Lester. Miami RHP Edinson Volquez (3-8, 4.29) is scheduled to face LHP Mike Montgomery (1-3, 2.26) in the series finale Sunday.
In a competition that is usually dominated by the hairless, old and tiny, it was the young and massive who took this year's price.
"We're proud to celebrate all dogs and pets by showing that no matter their imperfections, they are adoptable, lovable and a great addition to any family", says Erin Post, CEO of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, where the contest is held. He has lost his hearing and sight but his sense of smell is strong and he was enjoying all the smells the fairground offered - including funnel cakes and other fried goodies.
Numerous contestants are adopted.
The 13 other contestants were judged on first impressions, unusual attributes, personality and audience reaction. Monkey, a 6-year-old Brussel Griffon, and Icky, an 8-year-old unknown breed, were both rescued from a hoarding situation.
Third position went to a 14-year-old Chinese Crested-Harke mix named Chase. But for their owners, it was love at first sight.
