Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel Di Maria was handed a prison sentence and a fine after admitting to two counts of tax fraud during his time with Real Madrid.

A host of football stars have run into trouble in Spain over suspected tax fraud related to image rights, with Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo summoned to appear in court on July 31 to answer four counts of tax evasion of 14.7 million euros.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi had a tax-related trial previous year.

In Spain, sentences less than two years are normally suspended unless the individual has a prior conviction.

However, the deal must be formally processed in a hearing before a judge.

The document formalizing the deal between the parties said that Di Maria used a company in Panama to avoid tax.

Mourinho joined Chelsea after leading Real to the La Liga title in the 2011-12 season, before being hired at Manchester United in 2016.

Yet, Gestha also pointed out that Ronaldo can half or even quarter the amount of the minimum sentences in every case if in the next two months he pays back the tax he is accused of evading plus interests and fines.

In 2016, Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano received a one-year suspended prison sentence for tax fraud while Barca superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar are both now awaiting court decisions.
