CRPF jawan, driver injured in attack by militants in Kashmir

Two jawans were martyred and one other injured after heavily armed terrorists attacked Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) patrol party in Srinagar's Pantha Chowk area on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

Terrorists opened fire upon a team of the 29th Battalion of the CRPF near Panth Chowk bypass in Srinagar around 5:50 pm, officials said, adding that the CRPF men fired back at the terrorists. "A sub-inspector was killed and one was injured". CRPF personnel retaliated but there was no immediate report of any casualty on the militant side. "There are reports that a second jawan has also been injured", he said.

Authorities have imposed Section 144 imposed in Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar, this means that more than four people can not collect at one place close to the site where the incident took place.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti termed the police officer's lynching a "shameful incident", she said, "The police officer had told his security guards to go home and offer prayers on the holy night of Shab-e-Qadr, this was a breach of trust". A siege has been laid around the area and search operations are underway. No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Earlier, security agencies in border districts of Pathankot and Gurdaspur in Punjab were on high alert on Thursday following inputs that Pakistan-backed terrorists were planning to carry out an attack.
