THE British and Irish Lions were left to rue poor finishing after world champions New Zealand won a thrilling first Test 30-15 in Auckland.
The Lions know that a failure to win in Wellington next weekend will end their hopes of an overall series victory, and their head coach was unhappy with how his squad failed to take their chances in contrast to the clinical All Blacks.
The All Blacks had been expected from the outset to play attacking rugby and the Lions to emphasise defence, but it was the Lions who came close to producing the first try in only the second minute.
"And the All Blacks haven't exactly played champagne rugby and thrown the ball all over the place".
After being on the back foot for the first 10 minutes. the All Blacks gave the Lions a taste of their own medicine with a series of charges through the middle which had the tourists scrambling before they eventually conceded a penalty, which Beauden Barrett converted.
Sean O'Brien is a breakdown beast, Taulupe Faletau is a monster with ball in hand and Peter O'Mahony gets through plenty of work that typically goes unsighted.
"He will stay with us for the next three weeks then go back to his franchise and be back to play when he's rugby ready and fit enough for the rigours of Super Rugby".
"We need to be much more physical next week; that was disappointing", said Gatland.

Mr Jambon said the security will remain high at Brussels rain facilities, which means there is a serious and likely threat. He said that the attacker then charged at soldiers while shouting " Allahu akbar ", Arabic for "God is great".
"To play the All Blacks you have to be bold, you have to take risks", Gatland said.
The Lions' penalty count of 11 also needs to be corrected - "you put yourself under pressure by giving away soft penalties" - but Gatland wants improved physicality for the second Test alongside improvements at the set piece. That's fixable. And a scrum advantage where we missed a first-up tackle. "We need to learn from that and make sure we're better in that area next week". It was just disappointing that there were a couple of golden moments where we could have scored and didn't.
"Now it's about bringing other parts of our game, which is about playing with some flair and taking some risks and being courageous and bold", Gatland said.
While the All Blacks can expect more of the same on Saturday in what look like being greasy conditions, Murray said the tactic required more than just the ball coming off his boot correctly.
Read broke his right thumb nearly two months ago in South Africa and underwent surgery.
"The World Cup's a knockout tournament and the difference with the Lions is you get three (Tests)".
Gatland has coped with the challenge of uniting players from four nations under the Lions' banner on a short and intensive tour by imposing a highly-effective but minimalist style. They are looking forward to the game.
But they were pushing against the tide of history - the All Blacks have not lost at Eden Park in 38 Tests since 1994 and haven't lost a Test to the Lions in 24 years.
