USA 'mystified' over Gulf states' approach to Qatar blockade

Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir met with King Salman on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia to discuss its rift with Qatar and to propose his efforts to end the Gulf crisis in support of the Kuwaiti mediation.

US President Donald Trump has previously expressed support for the boycott on the grounds that Qatar supports terrorism.

Mr. Tillerson also noted the blockade was impeding US military operations against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, as well as the ongoing mission in Afghanistan, based out of the massive Al Udeid airbase in Qatar.

Videos posted on social media show large flocks of camels crossing the border with Saudi Arabia, wandering in the desert. Neither was its food supply from other countries such as Turkey and Iran.

In her remarks on Tuesday, Nauert denied that the secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, was taking a position that entirely contradicted the initial stance adopted by Trump.

The farmers are the latest victims in the escalating spat, which began 5 June when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut all diplomatic ties and suspended air and sea links with Doha, accusing it of supporting terrorism and controversial political groups.

Although all the GCC countries are members of the USA -led coalition against the Islamic State, and Qatar is part of the Saudi and Emirati campaign against Iran-backed rebels in Yemen, Qatar also favors dialogue with Iran, the Shiite power that Saudi Arabia considers to be its chief rival. "They said they would take a hard line on funding extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar!".

While Mr Tillerson has been speaking to all parties, Ms Nauert said the U.S. wasn't planning to play a formal mediation role.

Last week, Mattis hosted Qatar's defense minister here to finalize a $12 billion sale of 36 F-16 fighter jets.

Sheikh Mohammed said Qatar had not received any demands from the Gulf states or from countries seeking a diplomatic solution, including Kuwait, the United States, France and Britain, as the conflict dragged into its third week.

The Russian parliamentarian said that his country enjoys distinguished relations with the four countries and welcomes consultation with their leaders on various issues of mutual interest.

European Union foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini called for "de-escalation" and encouraged "all Gulf countries to engage in political dialogue without pre-conditions".

Bays said that the statement was "almost certainly cleared in advance" with the Pentagon and with the White House.
