May's programme for government was largely restricted to the technical work of making sure Brexit can happen: a bill that sets out how the government will transpose huge swathes of European Union law into British law and separate bills on related topics such as immigration, customs and fisheries.

When Elizabeth II rolled up to the Palace of Westminster on Wednesday, she did so without numerous trappings that typically attend the Queen's Speech.

The ruling Conservative party, or Tories, won 318 seats, but failed to secure an absolute majority in the parliament, resulting in a hung parliament.

"We just have to get this right", she added, "and cross-party, cross-business collaboration is vital in achieving that".

Damian Green, the first secretary of state who serves effectively as deputy prime minister, said earlier today a deal was still "entirely possible".

Labour adviser Damian McBride waded into the "bow row" on Twitter, posting a video showing then-opposition leader David Cameron remaining erect at 2009's Queen's Speech.
