Both Nottingham universities have received a gold-standard Government award highlighting outstanding teaching and learning.
.Meanwhile, the University of East Anglia (UEA) was awarded an overall mark of silver in the TEF.
Some of England's most respected universities have lost out to their less prestigious rivals in a new ranking of institutions which focuses on teaching excellence.
More than 130 United Kingdom universities and other higher education institutions being awarded gold, silver or bronze ratings for the quality of their teaching.
The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) attempts to measure a number of areas relevant to undergraduate education, including Teaching Quality, Learning Environment, Student Outcomes and Learning Gain. "We continue to channel the spirit and vision of our namesake and to do so with flair and rigour, working with students to provide the academic education and the personal skills they need to become a success".
Vice-Chancellor Rob Warner said: "To be ranked silver for our quality of teaching is a reflection of our successful students and the support they receive from our talented and dedicated staff".

Universities which choose to enter are assessed on a range of measures, including student satisfaction, drop-out rates and what students do after they graduate.
Sir Alan Langlands, vice-chancellor of the University of Leeds, said: "This gold award strengthens our excellent reputation in student education and recognises the outstanding all-round experience of being a Leeds student".
Some have also said that they have been forced to participate because the Government is set to allow only those rated bronze or higher to raise tuition fees in line with inflation from 2018.
Acting Director of the Russell Group Dr Tim Bradshaw warned: "The announcement earlier this year of an independent review of the TEF process was welcome". With close ties to industry in a vast array of sectors, many students undertake a placement year or other work experience during their course of study.
Professor Julia Buckingham, Vice-Chancellor, Brunel University London, says: "Brunel was founded with the distinct objective of building a brand of education, and later research, which was geared toward both the needs of industry, and toward addressing society's challenges on a global scale".
Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union, said there are concerns about how worldwide students will view the results.
