Chidanand: International Yoga Day is a historic moment for India

He also encouraged the Indian High Commissioner, Mr Birender Yadav, to consider having the next events in other regions of the country to also whip up the interest of people in those parts of the country.

A few days before the event on June 21, a list was prepared dispatching 70 ministers to as many destinations to be part of celebrations of the International Day of Yoga. Due to BJP chief Amit Shah's guidance, and Gujarat government's support, the event was a massive hit and we were successful in setting 24 new world records.

He has set up a ministry dedicated to promoting yoga and other traditional practices and persuaded the United Nations to create a dedicated International Yoga Day, a move seen as a triumph of soft power.

Indian scholars believe yoga dates back 5,000 years, based on archaeological evidence of poses found inscribed on stones and references to Yogic teachings in the ancient Hindu scriptures of the Vedas. It was the third event since its inception in 2015.

Social media was flooded with pictures of yoga, the country's signature cultural export, being performed in various places including an Indian Navy submarine and the landing deck of an aircraft carrier.

In her brief remarks, Ms Swaraj stressed that yoga belongs not merely to India, but to the whole world and that it is a "complete system" for wellbeing and harmony "within ourselves, as well as with nature".

"After yoga in the rains, time for some chai pakodas????", she tweeted along with a picture of a glass of tea and pakodas.

"If you buy a machine and don't operate it. after one year, the machine will not run".
