Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said in a floor speech Wednesday afternoon that he learned that Hodgkinson had volunteered for his progressive campaign for president, which focused on economic equality and almost toppled Hillary Clinton's presidential aspirations and threatened to derail the Democratic Convention last summer.

"I know he wasn't happy with the way things were going, the election results and stuff", the shooter's brother told the newspaper.

Sue Hodgkinson did respond "probably" when a reporter asked if her husband was "fed up with the system", the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. They had been separated since March when he went to Washington, D.C., to work on "changing the tax brackets".

Suzanne Hodgkinson, who lives in Belleville, Ill., claims she had "no idea" her husband was going to shoot people at the field, according to the Belleville News-Democrat. Republican congress members were holding their final practice before a scheduled charity baseball game in which they would face their Democratic colleagues.

"I feel awful", Suzanne Hodgkinson told a group of reporters.

Four people - including Rep. Steve Scalise, the House majority whip from Louisiana, who was shot in the hip - were wounded in the shooting.

Hodgkinson reportedly was also a regular presence in recent weeks on Mount Vernon Avenue, the main commercial street through the Del Ray neighborhood.

Rep. Steve Scalise is still in critical condition, but his health is improving, the Congressman's surgeon said two days after Scalise was shot at a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game.

He is under official investigation and will have to appear in the Pozuelo de Alarcon court No. 1 on July 31. Spanish prosecutors have accused the Portugal global of defrauding the tax authorities of €14.8m (£12.9m).

Sue Hodgkinson, the accused gunman's wife, told reporters Thursday she was shocked by her husband's actions, saying, "I can't believe he did this".

She and her husband broke up shortly after he was spoken to by police for discharging his rifle in their back yard.

Until recently, Hodgkinson ran a home-inspection business out of his house.

"I just want you to all go away and leave my neighbors in peace", she said. They don't deserve this.

Hodgkinson was in the YMCA Sunday afternoon, according to Del Ray resident Kris Balderston, who said he had seen Hodgkinson in the gym before, alone and not in workout clothes.

"I yelled, 'Quit shooting toward the houses, '" Schaumleffel said.

The Republican lawmaker who represented Hodgkinson's hometown said Hodgkinson was "always angry" about the GOP agenda, but "never crossed the line".
