The moves follows Russia's grave warning that it would track US-led coalition aircraft in central Syria as "targets".

The downing of the jet and Russia's response came as the US-led coalition and allied fighters battle to oust the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group from its Syrian bastion Raqa.

And that got the attention of Syrian President Bashar Assad's chief protector, Russia.

The Russian defense ministry says in a statement that, starting Monday, it will track all jets and drones of the USA -led coalition west of the Euphrates and treat them as targets.

It said Washington had failed to use the hotline - a vital incident-prevention tool - before downing the plane near Raqa.

"There is every reason to believe that if someone previously had doubts that Russia is taking all the necessary measures to ensure the safety of its aircraft flights in Syria, then these doubts will disappear with the Defense Ministry statement", Sputnik quoted Russian upper house committee chairman Victor Ozerov as saying.

Meanwhile, the US -backed opposition fighters said Assad's forces have been attacking their positions in the northern province of Raqqa and warned that if such attacks continue, the fighters will take action.

Coast guard official Tetsuya Tanaka said authorities are trying resolve what happened during the disputed 50 or so minutes. He said officials are planning to get hold of a device with communication records to examine further details of the crash.

Russian Federation made clear it was changing its military posture in response to the USA downing of a Syrian military jet on Sunday, something Damascus said was the first such incident since the start of the country's conflict in 2011. "His fate is unknown".

Earlier yesterday, Syrian troops attacked the SDF near Tabqa, wounding several and chasing them out of town, the coalition said.

It said the warplane was targeted in line with the "rules of engagement".

"As a result of the strike, the Syrian plane was destroyed".

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, in comments to Russian news agencies, compared the downing to "helping the terrorists that the U.S.is fighting against".

"What is this if not an act of aggression?"

"What is this if not an act of aggression?"It was the latest skirmish between the coalition andregime forces in the increasingly tense and crowded space in Syria's north and east". The agreement covers four zones in Syria where the rebels are fighting pro-government forces.
