Britain's Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles are driven to the Palace of Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament.

In an apparent sign of recognition that she must seek a broad consensus for any Brexit deal, Mrs May said getting European Union withdrawal right will mean securing "a deal which delivers the result of last year's referendum and does so in a way that commands maximum public support".

Although the tally of bills unveiled by the Queen was not particularly small, critics said that aside from Brexit it presented only a lightweight agenda to cover two years, rather than the usual one.

Mrs May will need the DUP to back her legislative programme when it goes to a vote next week in order to stay in power.

Brtiain's Queen Elizabeth II will set out the government's two-year blueprint for Brexit.

"The election result was not the one I hoped for, but this government will respond with humility and resolve to the message the electorate sent", May said in a statement.

For instance, the Queen will arrive at Parliament in a vehicle, rather than a horse-drawn carriage, and she will deliver the speech in everyday dress, instead of the traditional royal robes.

Today's Queen's Speech was stripped of so many of Theresa May's unpopular manifesto promises such as winter fuel allowance cuts that it seemed Her Majesty couldn't be bothered to put her customary regal crown and furs on to get down to business but appeared in a powder blue outfit fit for her dash to catch the 2.30pm first race at Royal Ascot, more importantly.

"Putting ourselves at the service of millions of ordinary working people for whom we will work every day in the national interest", she concluded. "That means getting a deal which delivers the result of last year's referendum and does so in a way that commands maximum public support".

Even before news of Prince Philip's illness, the government had announced that the speech would be delivered with less pageantry than normal a result of the timing of the snap election. The state opening is taking place only days after another huge annual event, Trooping the Color, a celebration of the Queen's birthday. But she did say the government is looking forward to a planned state visit by the Spanish royal couple set for July.

Theresa May's decision to extend the coveted invite of a state visit to Mr Trump so soon after his inauguration was hugely controversial.

Acknowledging that the outcome of this month's snap election fell well short of the emphatic victory she had hoped for, Mrs May said that her minority administration would seek to govern with "humility" to regain voters' trust. The legislative program spelt out a Brexit-dominated set of policies, that indicated May was keen to maintain broad support for leaving the European Union.

This means some of her more controversial pledges would not have enough support to progress through Parliament.

A Fisheries Bill promises to restore United Kingdom responsibility over access and management of its waters, and an Agriculture Bill states the Government will introduce an "effective" system to deliver stability to farmers who lose European Union support.
