Funeral services set for Otto Warmbier

China on Tuesday (June 20) expressed sorrow over the death of U.S. student Otto Warmbier following his release from North Korea in a coma, and urged Washington and Pyongyang to resolve tensions through dialogue.

"Frankly, if he was brought home sooner, I think the result would have been a lot different", the president said.

A tragic end to a North Korean holiday, Warmbier's detention, his comatose release, his untimely death is hardening language in Washington. "It puts us in a really precarious situation when Americans are detained there".

Dozens of North Korean missile launches and two nuclear bomb tests since the beginning of a year ago have heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula.

"Unfortunately, the terrible, torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today", his parents said.

Warmbier was arrested and imprisoned in North Korea during President Barack Obama's time in office, though North Korea only informed the U.S. of Warmbier's medical condition earlier this month.

Otto Warmbier was arrested by police at the airport of Pyongyang in January 2016 for stealing a political slogan banner from his hotel wall.

McCain says, "We all know that the Russians tried to interfere in our elections". For one thing, his sentence - 15 years' hard labour - was far longer than those handed out to others for what would seem to be far more significant crimes.
