Brexit negotiations begin in Brussels

Many in Brussels fear that London has no real strategy, with May under pressure at home, still trying to close a deal with a conservative Northern Ireland party to stay in power, and facing criticism for her handling of the aftermath of a devastating tower block fire.

"We're in the same place, we take the same view as Michel [Barnier] on this, we want to see the public informed... by proactive publication of what we are doing, not by leaks or erroneous briefings", Davis said.

The Brexit secretary's comments come as formal negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union are set to commence, and shortly after European Union leaders such as French president Emmanuel Macron have attempted to encourage Remain campaign diehards by saying "the door is always open" to staying.

Merkel said Monday: "I think it is premature to speculate on the first day of the negotiations how they will end".

Once "sufficient progress" is made on those issues, Mr Barnier is ready to let talks turn to an eventual trade deal.

Officials charged with negotiating the first departure of a country from the European Union were in Brussels on Monday to kick off the most consequential series of talks for the United Kingdom since the end of World War II.

The two sides are expected to meet monthly until March 2019, when Brexit is due to happen.

It is thought the European Union will move on to discussing a trade deal in October, if enough progress is made. Such firms sold 7.3 billion euros ($8.2 billion) worth of goods to customers in Britain previous year, their fourth-biggest market.

Stating that the times ahead will be "challenging", Davis said the emphasis will be on starting the talks in a "constructive tone".

Beyoncé has not posted on social media in about two weeks, fueling recent speculation that the birth of her twins was imminent. While she performed at the Grammys to rave reviews, she postponed plans to headline the Coachella Music Festival until 2018.

Mr Barnier said that Britain and the European Union have agreed on the priorities and timetable for Brexit negotiations after the first session of talks.

European stocks rose on Monday, partly on optimism about the talks actually getting underway after months of sniping and uncertainty, analysts said. Currently, more than 3 million European Union citizens live in Britain, and 1 million British citizens live in other parts of the EU. They should finally tell us what the aim is.

Meanwhile Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it would leave the single market but remain in the customs union if they were in charge of the deal.

Once agreement has been made in this phase of the talks, the second phase discussing the future trade relationship can begin.

Brexit negotiations start Monday, after British Prime Minister Theresa May lost her parliamentary majority in an election meant to strengthen her hand. "In the long run, this will be good for the United Kingdom and good for the rest of Europe".

Roth said that "Brexit is a very, very hard operation" and there's only a bit over a year to negotiate it.

Britain went from being one of the fastest-growing economies among the Group of Seven nations in 2016 to its slowest in early 2017 as the fall in the value of the pound after the Brexit referendum pushed up inflation and hit consumer spending.

"My very first words are to express my deep sympathies to the British people as you face tragic events, just as I want to express our solidarity to the Portuguese people", Barnier said, before turning to welcome his British counterpart.
