The Republican baseball team was practicing early Wednesday ahead of an annual charity game when a gunman who had ranted against President Trump opened fire wounding Scalise and others in the ball field outside Washington.
Scalise underwent a second surgery for internal injuries and a broken leg - his third procedure overall - and remained in critical condition but had shown improvement, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement on Thursday.
The House of Representatives majority whip underwent another operation on Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with his family.
James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Illinois, was shot dead by police after opening fire in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.
Members of Congress took the field at Washington's Nationals Park on Thursday night for the charity baseball game, many wearing hats to honour Mr Scalise, who has represented Louisiana in the House since 2008.
Senate Majority Whip Steve Scalise and three others were wounded in the attack.
He said that "there are hundreds of fragments" of the bullet still in Scalise's body, but that there is more risk associated with finding them than there is benefit of taking them out of him.
"We fully expect him to be able to walk. hopefully, run".
The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said. His physicians have indicated extensive hospital treatment will be necessary, followed by a period of rehabilitation.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday.
Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials declined to confirm media accounts that the list of names Hodgkinson carried was a "kill list"; they said the names were listed without any other comment. He also suffered damage to a number of internal organs, which doctors have declined to discuss in detail.
The FBI said that the shooter's weapons found at the scene - a 9mm handgun and 7.62mm caliber rifle - had been legally purchased.
He is now in serious condition, an improvement from the critical condition he was in since his first surgery on Wednesday.
